“The dinner table and car rides are two of the most important places in the world for parents because they present the perfect opportunities to talk to our children about their day, see what is on their minds, and form connections with them. Yet we are allowing screens to take this away from us. I see it every morning when I am pulling into the high school parking lot. There is always a lot of traffic as there are 1,300 students and staff all converging at the same time. When I look in my rearview mirror I see the same image all the time—a stressed-out parent driving the car and their teenage child in the front seat wearing a set of headphones and peering into their phone. There’s no communication, no connection.”
