Study of Sheep
Thought you might be interested. I taught this to my teenage Bible class recently here in Greenwood, Arkansas.
1. Readings: Psalm 23, 100:3; Isa. 53:6; Matt. 9:36; John 10:11-15
2. Three Observations about Sheep, in the context of the Bible.
A. SHEEP NEED GUIDANCE – Some animals, not domesticated,
Have impressive survival skills in the wild. Sheep cannot
Survive without care, oversight, guidance. {Exceptions:
Rocky Mt. Big Horns in Canada.}
B. SHEEP NEED FOOD – Some animals are skilled hunters
And do not need humans to feed them. In the context of
Biblical times, sheep needed to be fed (Jno. 21:17).
C. SHEEP NEED PROTECTION – No defensive skills like
Bears, wolves or other wild animals. Sheep are subject to
Attack by coyotes, cougars, wolves. Need fencing, guard
Dogs, shepherds who are alert.
D. On the Positive Side – Sheep are capable of incredible
Bonding with each other and lasting bonds with their
Human caregivers. Emotional and Relational Intelligence
That far exceeds wolves, snakes, pigs or cattle.
E. Acts 20:28-32.
3. What Does All This Have To Do With Us?
A. We need guidance: Jer. 10:23.
B. We need food: Matt. 4:4.
C. We need Protection: Rom. 8:37-39.
